Buttoned Up!

Cabin Repairs Add comments

Last night it was cold! I got up in the middle of the night and the outside thermometer read 28 degrees. My sister in Massachusetts would tell me that’s nothing, but my house was full of holes. So, I was very motivated to do something about that today.

I got all the plywood back on the side of the house, and plastic covering that, then I got the siding back on the little triangular area near the bathroom and on the front of the house. My arms are killing me! But, luckily, I can take a bath and soak them later. Already the house seems warmer tonight.

I still have to replace the overlapping cedar siding at the side of the house and repair the railing on the front porch, but it will probably rain tomorrow so I will give my arms a rest for a day or two. Meanwhile, I think I did a pretty good job of sealing the house and any holes where pipes or wires come into the house. It should be easier to keep the place warm from now on.

Glad you were able to get the place closed up. Sleep warm!
m (Its cold and drafty here!–In california they didn’t insulate at the time this house was built!)

Maybe you should talk to one of those companies that blow insulation into holes drilled in the wall? At least the roof is better insulated now. I bet there are companies that could do a consultation and suggest all kinds of other things you could do. One fairly easy thing would be for you guys to staple up some rolled insulation on the underside of the floor under the house. You have a stapler, so with one person holding it in place, the other could just staple it up. Wear goggles, long sleeves, and gloves though, because the fiber dust from the insulation can be very irritating. Might want to wear a breathing filter too. :)

I’ve been thinking about the blown in insulation too. And the suggestion about the rolled insulation on the floor underside–my neighbor Tom suggested that last year. Hm.
Well, maybe we need to do more than think about these things.
(the computer is driving us crazy today, really slow and the Yahoo came up with a new page that is very annoying).
